Satan Disciples history has been a tough one to figure out but I am hoping this time around I got the history down much better. This organization has a hell of a history and they have often lived up to their name, symbols and their legacy.
The beginning, 1960: 15th & Talman
For many years I have heard legends of a character named “King Satan” as the founder of the Satan Disciples but I could never figure out who “King Satan” is. The answer was under my nose for nearly two decades and he was on the 2008 episode “Devil’s Playground” during season 3 of the A&E TV show “Gangland.” In the early part of the episode the show interviews “Ray” who was an original member of the SDs. Ray became part of the SDs when he was 12 in the year 1960. Turns out Ray is not only an original member he is the founder. Ray is “King Satan.” As the TV show states, the Pilsen area was a racially changing neighborhood in the 1950s when Ray and the other co-founders moved to the area. The Satan Disciples did not start on the streets of Pilsen, they began in North Lawndale.
By, 1960 North Lawndale became a completely African American neighborhood from the railroad tracks by Kolmar Avenue to Douglas Park and by 1960 the Egyptian Cobras and Vice Lords ruled the whole neighborhood. Since the 1950s there has always been a part of North Lawndale that is mixed race, this area is from California Avenue to the railroad tracks just east of Rockwell Avenue and from Taylor Street to 19th Street. This area was the last area of North Lawndale to experience white flight as Mexicans and Puerto Ricans moved into the neighborhood. The neighborhood was once Italian, Russian, Polish, Bohemian and even Gypsies but as African Americans were taking over west of Douglas Park, east of Western Avenue was becoming more Mexican now that many of the whites left; however, many whites stayed. Racial tensions combined with many gangs moving into the Pilsen area like Latin Counts and Ambrose caused a group of about 12 boys around the age of 12 to come together in the middle of this neighborhood at 15th Street and S. Talman Avenue.
These boys were often from religious families and this was even mentioned a little on the Gangland show when Ray told his story of how his mother reacted when he joined (created) the Satan Disciples. As the boys hung out they got into a lot of trouble on the streets and got into many fights. The origin of the name “Satan Disciples” came from a priest that did community outreach in the area and came across the these boys and called them “Devil’s Disciples” and that gave Ray the idea for the name “Satan Disciples” in 1960. The original SDs made their turf 15th and Talman in North Lawndale. These boys may have been young but they were tough as nails and defended their turf ferociously.
Some of he original SDs were: Ray, Bobby Blackburn, Teddy, Jesse, Rich, Joe, Frank Travino and “King Fish.”
The original Satan Disciples were fairly well mannered and well dressed and even had their own band. The only time they were not well mannered is when they faced their enemies and that was when the horns would come out. Speaking of horns, the idea for the baby devil with horns with pitchfork came from old comic books gang members used to read; therefore, that was their new symbols along with an intimating name. The baby devil from the comics became the main symbol of the Satan Disciples.
18th & California: 1962
In the year 1962, many of the original SDs were getting ready for high school as they were now 14 years old. Bobby Blackburn and his family moved to 18th and California and Blackburn would not give up his life as a Satan Disciple just because he moved a few blocks away in the neighborhood. Blackburn was known for being well dressed just like a real gangster. Blackburn was a white member of the SDs. Many believe the SDs started as white guys but the truth is many of them were Hispanic from the start but Bobby Blackburn was a key member and this is why 18th and California became a very serious section and became the second motherland of the Satan Disciples and this was heavily built upon the original leadership of Bobby Blackburn, Blackburn founded 18th and California. 18Th & California is still an active SD area and has one of the strongest legacies in SD history.
Taylor & Racine
Sometime around or right after 1962, Satan Disciples formed in the Near West Side community at the intersection of Taylor Street and Racine. These SDs were a mix of white and Hispanic members. I talked to one older man that grew up in the area and he remembered the SDs here in the earlier 60s. There are legends that say the SDs started here but that is not true, 15th and Talman was first then came 18th and California, very shortly after came Taylor and Racine. I don’t exactly know what gangs this section fought with. This section eventually moved to Taylor and Oakley, Aurora and West Chicago in the mid-90s.
18th & Oakley
In about 1964, Satan Disciples members like “Big Sach” moved to the Heart of Chicago neighborhood (West Pilsen) and resided at 18th Street and Oakley Avenue. While east Pilsen became more of a Mexican community by 1964, west Pilsen was more Italian. When this area became more Hispanic there were racial tensions that grew, not only that Mexican gangs were forming like the Spartans. Ambrose was also a growing threat to west Pilsen as Ambrose wanted to take over these streets as did Latin Counts from east Pilsen. The Latin Kings set up shop in west Pilsen in 1964 and this prompted the formation of the 18th and Oakley SDs. 18th and Oakley became a major section becoming one of the main 4 sections of Satan Disciples. 18th and Oakley remains active and will perhaps always be an SD stronghold for decades to come.
24th & Washtenaw
In the year 1966, the Marshall Square community (east Little Village) began to racially change from mostly white to Puerto Rican and Mexican. Mexican families began moving here from Pilsen while Puerto Rican families came from the Near West Side. Multiple gangs from Pilsen and the Near West Side settled on these streets like the Artistics from the Near West Side, Morgan Deuces (Cullerton Deuces) from Pilsen and now the Satan Disciples arrived from 18th Street to take over 24th Street and Washtenaw Avenue. “Big Aggie” also known as “King Canary” founded the 24th Street chapter who is the older brother of Agapito “King Aggie” Villalobos who was featured on the TV show Gangland. King Aggie ran the SDs eventually but did not flip to an SD until the early 70s, when his older brother started 24th, Aggie was a member of Ambrose. These SDs have fought hard for this area over the decades with many battles against Latin Kings, Stone Kents, Cullerton Deuces and many Pilsen gangs. In later years these SDs had bloody battles with Two Six and Two Two Boys and have continued to survive in this area because it was originally built by some of the top members of the Satan Disciples.
Brighton Park
Brighton Park is saturated with Satan Disciples and has been since the early 80s. The SDs in this community mainly rule east Brighton Park from California to Western and from Pershing to 48th Street. Since 1977, the SDs in Brighton Park had been heavily at odds with Two Six and they battle with Saints and Latin Kings from neighborhoods nearby. 42nd and Campbell area SDs started by the early 80s while other groups of SDs within this region formed as late as the early 2000s.
I have heard from many sources that Satan Disciples were in Brighton Park since the late 1960s and a neighbor of one of my good friends, a much older man, told me he fought with a Brighton Park SD in the very early 70s. I have heard of many more accounts of Brighton Park SDs but no one ever said what streets they claimed in this area. Consensus says they were white members which was a reflection of the demographics in Brighton Park back then, Mexican people did not arrive until the late 70s. The earliest Brighton Park SDs of the late 60s to mid-70s came to be in this neighborhood because many white boys from here commuted to high schools in other neighborhoods like Pilsen and they picked up the SD ways and became members. Brighton Park SDs have always been connected with 18th and California Satan Disciples.
In the year 1977, Mexican migration came to Brighton Park after the closing of steel factories that triggered white flight. Mexican families from neighborhoods like Pilsen and Little Village found Brighton Park to be a better community, but white gangs like the 47th Street South Side Heads did not want Hispanic migration and began victimizing Hispanic youths. Many of these youths joined the Satan Disciples that branched from 18th and California. These SDs formed strong at 42nd and Campbell area and became mafia like as they have survived generation after generation beginning in 1977 and by the early 80s they were deep in Brighton Park. Satan Disciples have become a permanent staple in this community and only Two Sixs have been able to stay in the neighborhood as SDs run most the rest out.
Early 1970s: The end of an era, the beginning of a new era
The original Satan Disciples were very present in their neighborhoods for a decade or close to a decade. Ray shipped off to Vietnam in 1967 and was gone until 1971. When Ray came back he was not happy with what he saw with the SDs and did not want to be with them anymore. King Fish along with other SDs began associating with the Gaylords that formed at 18th and Western because they no longer felt a connection with the SDs any more and they flipped to Gaylords. A new era of SDs began on 18th Street and on Taylor Street, this was a new generation of members that sold marijuana and carried guns. King Canary took over leadership of the nation in 1971 until he went to prison in the early 80s which is because original leaders backed away from the scene like Kingfish and Ray. There was quite a separation between the original SDs and the later SDs; however, the leaders that rose to the top like King Canary were initiated by the originals.
Insane Gangster
In the year 1976, the Two Two Boys formed in the Little Village area between Satan Disciple, Latin King and Ambrose territories. Ambrose was new to Little Village along 26th Street while SDs were just to the east of the Two Two Boys. The Two Two Boys had many family members in the SDs, Ambrose and Two Six which is what helped ease the war going on between Ambrose and the SDs since the 60s. In 1977, the Two Sixs reorganized once the Ayala brothers joined the gang bringing in links with the Mexican drug cartel. In the year 1978, a coalition formed in Illinois prisons between gangs that would later become known as “Folks,” the Satan Disciples, Two Six, Two Two Boys and Ambrose were part of this coalition before it was even named. On the streets, these future Folks came together on the streets to team up against the much larger Latin Kings and their allies the Cullerton Deuces and Kents. Satan Disciples formed special alliances in 1978 with Two Six and with the Two Two Boys.
Satan Disciples, Two Six and the Black Gangster Disciples got together behind prison walls to come together along business lines. The Two Sixs had the hookup with the drug cartels and the BGDs were getting hooked into the heroin game in the public housing projects. The Satan Disciples got hooked into the drug business in 1978 due to these connections and began developing their own angle of money making in the concepts of free enterprise. The free enterprise would often start off illicit through drug sales but eventually members could stack on that and convert it into legal businesses or just start a legal business from the start, it was all about making money. The BGDs shared “Gangster” concepts with Two Six and SDs. Two Six became “Gangster Two Six” while SDs adopted the “Gangster” in their name too.
SDs created the “Insane” concepts; however, these Insane concepts were not linked to or had anything to do with what the Spanish Cobras were forming on the north side. Satan Disciples created their own “Insane” and they were linked with the free enterprise concepts, SDs could then pass on free enterprise to their allies. For some time Two Six was part of Insane but Two Two Boys were heavier into it and into it longer. Since SDs were both “Insane” and “Gangster” they became “Insane Gangster Satan Disciples” as their full name. The only other gang in history to adopt both Insane and Gangster were the City Knights.
West Town
The West Town area of Chicago is a neighborhood that consists of multiple smaller neighborhoods that have such significance that they are known by their own names like Wicker Park, East Village, Ukrainian Village etc…almost no one says “West Town, accept if one is talking about the streets south of Chicago Avenue. Many gangs were founded in these neighborhoods and the most notorious white and Hispanic gangs once walked these streets and fought over them in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The Latin Kings, Maniac Latin Disciples, Spanish Cobras, Gaylords and many others were founded in West Town over the decades but in the end it would take an outsider south side gang to reach permanent status in this community area and that group is the Satan Disciples.
By the late 70s, the old wave of gangs in West Town south of Chicago Avenue began to withdraw from the area as white flight finally swept these streets. Many old school and original C-Notes began moving out, Gaylords closed up completely in 1975 and the Lazy Gents left the area by the late 70s. As the mostly Italian community south of Chicago Avenue left the community a wave of Hispanic migration came to the neighborhood that consisted of Mexican people and Puerto Rican people. C-Notes never went extinct from this area and they were not welcoming of their new neighbors and this is when Satan Disciple members Beaver, Cisco, Burt, Fish, and Canary started a north side group of Satan Disciples at Erie Street and May Street right near the old Gaylords original neighborhood. “Beaver” was the 18th and Oakley SD that started these SDs and is the first north side founder. These Disciples were right near the I-90 Expressway and were the first north side Satan Disciples in history. I am not sure of the exact year this section started but it was in the late 70s between 1977 to 1979. These Satan Disciples were part of the UPCI alliance alongside Ashland Vikings, Harrison Gents, Maniac Latin Disciples, and Milwaukee Kings which was an alliance to help the community in 1980 until 1986 when war erupted with Milwaukee Kings. Puncher, the founder of the Ashland Vikings told me about these SDs himself and their membership in the UPCI.
In 1982, more Satan Disciples branched from Erie and May and opened at Huron and Ada, this became the second West Town section. In 1985, Ohio and Wood was opened by some younger SDs and this is where the SDs would shift their focus over time and they would grow within the area. The worst enemy in the 80s in this area remained the C-Notes until Latin Kings showed up in 1990 starting a three way violent gang war. All three gangs have survived gentrification over the decades but Satan Disciples remain the most visible and active in this area since the late 70s.
Satan Disciples in this neighborhood not only have violent wars with Latin Kings, they also have severe rivalries with Harrison Gents, Ashland Vikings and C-Notes.
63rd & Artesian
Beginning in the mid-70s, Hispanic people began migrating to the Marquette Park neighborhood from Little Village and Pilsen. Starting in 1977, Ambrose and Two Six moved into these Hispanic areas around 63rd Street, the two gangs were allies against white gangs. Many of the white gangs were white supremacist because the Ku Klux Klan Chicago headquarters was in Marquette Park at the time and their movement was growing by the late 70s. Satan Disciples would move into the area at 63rd and Artesian in the late 70s. These SDs bonded with the Two Sixs and both groups went by “TSDN” concepts which stood for “Two Six Disciple Nation.” The SDs ruled the far eastern part of Marquette Park while Ambrose and Two Six were further west. In the late 80s Gangster Disciples and Black Disciples moved into east Marquette Park but the SDs would remain for decades.
King Aggie
In 1980 “King Canary” was no longer the leader of the SDs and Agapito “King Aggie” Villalobos stepped into that role. I do not know what happened to “King Canary” but he was no longer in charge by 1980 is all I know and I think it was caused by King Canary going to prison. Under “King Aggie” the Satan Disciples opened up new territory throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s in other parts of the city, Chicagoland suburbs and other states as membership swelled into the thousands. Under Aggie the SDs got heavily tied into the cocaine game and this increased membership greatly since free enterprise was also tied into big time cocaine trafficking. “King Aggie” was able to run the organization even after he was incarcerated in 1983 for armed robbery and he was pulling in street money behind bars. Many more city and suburban sections opened during the Aggie era and west Pilsen became even heavier of a SD hood. SDs fought heavily against Ambrose, Latin Counts, Latin Kings and especially the Bishops that advanced into west Pilsen.
Many of Pilsen gangs have tried to conquer turf west of Ashland Ave but are often met with bullets and beatings which would then cause them to determine their conquest just was not worth the cost. The only gangs that were ever able to contend with SDs in the long term west of Ashland in this area and stay on 18th Street is the Bishops and Ambrose.
After the scandal of the shooting death of “Gizmo” in 1995, Aggie avoided prison time and after that Aggie moved away and completely retired from gang life and became very religious.
Terror Town
In the year 1980, the Satan Disciples opened up a legendary section at 51st and Wood in the Back of the Yards neighborhood alongside a new wave of Mexican migration to the neighborhood. In this neighborhood SDs found rivalry with the Saints and fought other newly arriving gangs like Latin Kings and Bishops. This group of SDs is one of the more serious groups in SD history and they gave a hell of a time to their enemies. It is no surprise that these “Terror Town” SDs still have 51st and Wood presently. During the 1980s the SDs allowed Two Two Boys into 51st and Wood, but once war erupted in 1992 the Two Two Boys left quickly.
Sleepy Hallow
In the year 1980, “Tank” and others of the K-Town area (Little Village area) Satan Disciples moved to the Garfield Ridge neighborhood in the Midway Airport area of the city. These Satan Disciples arrived to support the newer Hispanic community that had moved into the Sleepy Hallow area of Garfield Ridge. Insane Popes ruled this neighborhood which was a mostly white gang and much of the Hispanic youths tangled with Popes many times along racial lines. The Satan Disciples arrived to recruit these youths, and the Satan Disciples established the “Sleepy Hallow SDs” that remain in this area permanently.
West Chicago
While many Chicago gang were opening in multiple suburbs in the early 1980s much of this settlement did not stick around. The Satan Disciples did not migrate with this 1979-1980 migration wave and remaining a city organization. The Satan Disciples would not advance into the suburbs until they could start a quality outpost. As the Taylor and Racine area began to racially change by the mid-80s Satan Disciples began to withdraw from that corner while many members moved to Taylor and Oakley. Some members of the Taylor and Racine SDs moved to the suburb of West Chicago in 1985. These members moved into apartments in West Chicago like Aspen Ridge or Main Park apartments in the year 1985. The West Chicago Satan Disciples were among some of the first Chicago gangs to reside in West Chicago. The SDs of West Chicago have always been a force to be reckoned with as they have violently battled with Surenos, Latin Counts, Latin Kings and Sin City Boys for decades. These SDs were the most active in the late 90s during a brutal war with area gangs, the war was bloody. Satan Disciples were sued in 1999 by the village because the gangbanging was so brutal for a suburb.
War with Two Six
On the day of November 7, 1986 relations between Satan Disciples and Two Six would reach a historic disruption. On this day Ambrose gang members became infuriated with Two Sixs from 28th Street over a girl and proceeded to drive to their neighborhood and shoot at them in the K-Town area of Little Village. Two Six got revenge by crashing a party in the Marquette Park community at 63rd and Washtenaw held by Ambrose in their territory. A group of Two Six opened fire into a crowd of party goers shooting two Two Two Boy gang members killing one of them while they killed two Satan Disciples too. After this the Satan Disciples declared war on Two Six which would become a legendary war that never ended. Because of this war the Two Sixs dropped the “Insane” from their name and became just Gangster Two Six while SDs remained Insane Gangster and Two Two Boys were still Insane with the SDs.
War with Milwaukee Kings, Harrison Gents, Ashland Vikings and Maniac Latin Disciples
The West Town SDs were very close with their Folks allies when SDs first came to the area. In the early 80s SDs were heavily unified with all the Folks in the area under the U.P.C.I alliance. In 1986 the UPCI dissolved because of multiple wars developed within these allies. Satan Disciples would launch into an ugly war with Milwaukee Kings that turned very deadly for years. The Harrison Gents would also evolve into the West Town SDs biggest enemies. SDs would also go at it with Maniac Latin Disciples and Ashland Vikings who were all U.P.C.I allies. War with Milwaukee Kings and Harrison Gents has become some of the most legendary gang conflicts in Chicago history.
Wars with Maniac Latin Disciples and Milwaukee Kings intensified in 1994 which cost the freedom and lives of members on both sides.
The 32nd Street projects
In the year 1988, the Satan Disciples converted a portion of a Bridgeport neighborhood gang called the “Mighty Projects” into SDs and that brought the SDs 32nd and Lituanica in the Bridgeport Homes projects. Satan Disciples of 32nd have had a long bloody war with Latin Kings from 33rd and Morgan for decades. The SDs of the Bridgeport projects area have been here since 1988.
The Horseshoe
In the late 1980s Ridgeway Lords and Satan Disciples members began leaving the Little Village area and moving into a trailer park in the suburb of Justice. This location was prime territory because of how close they were located to the expressways. Both groups were able to establish themselves well in the suburb by by the mid-90s the Ridgeway Lords had flipped to Satan Disciples. The Almighty Popes street gang moved into the subdivision in 1994 and a war erupted between SDs and the Popes. The war was costly for both gangs in the mid-90s causing both groups to mostly leave the area by the late 90s. The Horseshoe was a legendary territory for the Satan Disciples in the 90s, but heavy police activity caused SD operations to close.
Waukegan
In about 1989, the Satan Disciples from 18th and California moved to the south side streets of Waukegan as many white residents began to leave and many Hispanic families from Chicago moved in. The founder of the Waukegan Satan Disciples is “Bogart” and the rest of the original Waukegan SDs are: Turo-T, Diaper, O-Boy, Big Ed, Faze, Berto, Wizz, and Skeezer, Butrick and Grand. Satan Disciples came to the intersection of Washington Park and Catalpa Avenue. Satan Disciples arrived when the Insane Unknowns arrived and war ensued that still carries on into present years. SDs also have a presence in the Yeoman Park area. SDs have also had a vicious conflict with Latin Kings in Waukegan.
35th & Wood
Between 1989 and 1990 Satan Disciples came to the McKinley Park neighborhood as the area experienced some white flight. Insane Popes were the big gang is McKinley Park at the time and SDs were big rivals of them; therefore, war the Popes was immediate at the SDs were taking the 35th Street and Wood area while hanging out with a small group of Two Sixs. Two Sixs and SDs hung out here for some time until war with each other broke them apart and Two Six moved out. Latin Counts moved in down the street at 33rd and Wood which brought an ugly war with Counts. Spanish Cobras settled in the neighborhood and even though both Cobras and Disciples were Folks they couldn’t get along. The SDs of 35th and Wood have had a long run since 89 or 90 and have always been one of the bigger gangs in McKinley Park.
Bolingbrook
When I was in high school in the mid-late 90s I remember hearing of the Satan Disciples in Bolingbrook. I just never met any of them and did not know if I was attending school with any of them or not. These SDs came to Bolingbrook as early as 1989 or as late as 1992. Bolingbrook SDs were another part of the major suburban expansion of SDs in the early 90s. These SDs branched off of 42nd and Campbell from Brighton Park. I don’t know where the SDs were in Bolingbrook, but hopefully in time I will gain that knowledge.
Minute Man Park
In the year 1990, a sudden white flight wave swept the Clearing community as many Hispanic families moved in, some from Mexico and others from other parts of the city. Satan Disciples settled right next to Minute Man Park. The Insane Popes and Twelfth Street Players especially represented mostly white youths that have lived in Clearing their whole lives and did not like this racial change; therefore, SDs went at them hard along with Two Sixs that moved in. SDs remain a part of the Minute Man Park area.
59th & Pulaski
In the year 1990, when sudden white flight swept the Midway Airport area, there was an instant gang rivalry that popped off in the quiet West Lawn and West Elsdon neighborhoods. Not only does 59th and Pulaski divide the West Elsdon neighborhood from the West Lawn neighborhood, it is also the border for a vicious gang rivalry between Latin Kings, Two Six and Satan Disciples. The Satan Disciples would reside in the West Lawn side of 59th and Pulaski area and the western side of Pulaski. The Two Sixs would take West Lawn side east of Pulaski. Latin Kings were in West Elsdon. This is a war that has continued through the decades and SDs remain active in this area.
Canaryville
Satan Disciples of the Back of the Yards are mainly known for Terror Town at 51st and Wood but there once was another SD group in the community at 48th and Elizabeth in the 80s. These SDs closed 48th and Elizabeth and headed to the Canaryville community in the early 90s at 48th and Union. This was an unlikely neighborhood to allow outside gangs but the SDs got in with much of the local crowd and the SDs could be found right outside of Tilden High School. SDs went against Latin Kings and Insane Popes from this neighborhood and both those rivals went extinct in this community in the 2000s. The only group the Canaryville SDs could not remove are the Insane Deuces, the two gangs have been vicious rivals since they arrived in the early 90s.
Rockford
In the year 1992, Satan Disciples moved onto the rough streets of southeast Rockford in an area that became a blighted area that was once home to many factory workers until they closed. Although Satan Disciples were not first on the southeast side they would recruit into becoming one of Rockford’s prominent gangs. Satan Disciples in Rockford are the product of former Gangster Disciple white members that turned SD while in the Illinois jail system. These SDs now took over Nina Terrace which is a struggling subdivision on the far west side. SDs are also big on the southeast side along 5th Street. By the early 2000s the Rockford SDs had converted all the white Gangster Disciples and this is how Rockford SDs tend to be strongly white. SDs in Rockford have a heavy rivalry with Insane Unknowns and Latin Counts.
Cicero
The Gangland TV show’s episode has more than just Ray as a SD founder. The show interviewed Bobby D of the SDs and in the show he even states that he started the SDs in Cicero. Bobby D and “Wakko D” were the two that started SDs in Cicero in the year 1992. Even though many other gangs had been in Cicero a lot longer than SDs the SDs would end up growing into becoming on of Cicero’s bigger gangs. Prior to the SD’s arrival, Two Two Boys and Noble Knights were the biggest gangs in Cicero but once the SDs arrived that would change and SDs were at war with both of those gangs, SDs only allied with Gangster Disciples from Cicero and Insane Majestics, the Majestics were turned Insane and brought into Folks thanks to the Cicero SDs. Satan Disciples of Cicero were so notable they were sued by Cicero in the year 2000.
War with Two Two Boys
While still on the subject of Cicero, this suburb is where the origin of the SD and Two Two Boy war came from. In 1992, the Two Two Boys wanted to flip the Majestic Party Crew into Folks and the two of them would share 31st and Laramie like they already were. As soon as the Satan Disciples formed in Cicero in 1992 they snatched the Majestics to be under them and turned the Majestics Folks and they became “Insane Majestics.” The Two Two Boys were infuriated and started a war with the Majestics over it which led to war with Satan Disciples too. Two Two Boys left Insane after this and have always been at war with SDs since 1992.
59th Street
In the year 1988, one of Little Village’s biggest gangs the Ridgeway Lords lost one of their most important members that was shot to death by Two Sixs. This broke an alliance between RLs and Two Six and this was a war that the Ridgeway Lords could not afford to fight in. Older members of the Ridgeway Lords walked away from the gang life while young members needed to find a new home and that is when they flipped to becoming Satan Disciples at 27th and Komensky. “OSO” was the leader of the pack and was a former Ridgeway Lord. These SDs at 27th battled gangs all around them until they finally had to withdrawn from the area in 1993.
OSO moved to the 59th and Spaulding area and spread the word of the Satan Disciples very quickly. OSO got together with JC, Beanie, Drak and Malo started the Satan Disciples at 59th and Spaulding. Although the Latin Kings were deep in the Gage Park area, the SDs were still able to grow into the area and become powerful. OSO would eventually end up in prison but the 59th Street SDs continued to battle Latin Kings for these streets since 1993.
Aurora
When Taylor and Racine closed shop in the mid-90s, members went in two different directions. Some moved down Taylor Street to Taylor and Oakley which was a lot closer to their 18th Street sections, other moved to Aurora and started a new chapter in Aurora in the mid-90s. I am not sure where in town these Aurora SDs were but they had a significant presence in this community for a long time. SDs fought hard against Latin Kings which caused legal issues but the SDs continued until at least the 2010s.
End of the “King”
In 1995 “King Aggie” was released from prison but he soon found he was not embraced by all of the SDs. Many SDs told “King Aggie” that he should not be the leader and that they wanted second in command Danny “Gizmo” Valencia to run the Satan Disciples as the new “King.” In November of 1995 “Gizmo” was shot and killed. It was said that his own gang killed him, more specifically “King Aggie” supporters, supposedly the hit was ordered by “King Aggie.” After that the Satan Disciples never had another “King.” Aggie was arrested and charged for the murder but was found not guilty, after this Aggie moved to another state and became highly religious and removed from gang life.
Boxwood
In the year 1997, the Satan Disciples took over much of the Boxwood townhouses and even ran out a lot of the Latin King presence that had been there since 1982. Boxwood SDs were highly active and had a vicious war with Surenos until many Surenos flipped to SDs. The downfall of the Boxwood SDs came in 2011 when Ice raids brought down many of their non-citizen members, both gangs went extinct in Boxwood, the Maniac Latin Disciples took it over in 2011 up to present years.
The business
The reason for the closure of certain sections was due to decisions to withdraw if an area was not profitable enough or if police presence was too strong. The SDs often function in a very organized crime manner and would only leave a turf if it was more profitable to invest more in another area. Using smart business sense the SDs had grown their profits, opened several legit businesses, retained original territory and opened new turf and eventually would grow to have almost 10,000 members.
